Clare slipped in the front door that night. They’d decided to see a movie after work, and like after every time she saw him, she felt a little dazed. But in a good way, in a new and exciting way. She hadn’t known him very long, but she couldn’t believe the strength of her feelings for him. She didn’t know what love felt like, but surely this was it? The butterflies in her stomach when she thought of him, the way her heart beat faster when he kissed her, the way she missed him when she’d only seen him a few hours earlier and counted the minutes until she could see him again.
The house was cold and dark, aside from a faint light streaming from her Nana’s room. The sound of coughing punctuated the stillness of the house. Knocking quietly on her Nana’s door, she waited to hear ‘come in’ before she poked her head around the door.
“Nana?” she asked. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.”
“You sound wheezy. Why don’t you go back to the doctor again tomorrow?” she said, lingering at the door. “I can take you.”
“You have work. Besides, I’m fine.”
That cough didn’t sound ‘fine’. She crept in and sat on the edge of the bed. “Can I get you another blanket, or turn the heater up?”
Nana sighed. “I’m fine. It’s only the end of this bronchitis.”
Clare nodded and wished her ‘good night’, closing the door behind her. Changing into her warmest pyjamas, she curled into her bed with her dog eared copy of Outlander. Hearing about the play had made her want to reread it, and delve back to into a world where the characters felt like old friends.
Hearing the faint noise of coughing coming from her Nana’s room, she shut her eyes, and a pang of guilt hit her. Had she been too caught up in Pete over the last few weeks and not paying enough attention to her Nana? She chewed her lip and rested the book on the blankets.
Thoughts of Pete’s good news about the project in Melbourne flooded back to her. She was proud of him. He was a dedicated researcher, and his thesis sounded impressive to her. Not that she knew much about pharmaceuticals, but if one of the world’s biggest companies wanted him to work with them, it certainly was a feather in his cap.
Her heart sunk at the thought of him going back for a month. She’d miss him. But it wasn’t just that. What if…She shook that off. It was still too early to be worrying about what would happen long term. But fear continued to creep over her. What were his long term plans? Were they also in Melbourne? He said he missed his family, and clearly, job opportunities for him would be more likely in Melbourne, where several large pharmaceutical companies were based.
It was early days, but she was falling in love with him. But how did he feel? He cared about her, but did he see a future
